WOODEN PENS - KAURI PINE
Kauri was extensively used in furniture making from the late 1800's, for at least a full generation. This timber was ideal for furniture, because it was straight grained, almost knot free, strong, easy to work and best of all - plentiful.
Alas, most of the Kauri was cut down long ago. It's not easy to get Kauri nowadays, so there mightn't be many more Kauri pens coming from my workshop.
[I've got my eye on the giant Kauri tree in the Geelong Botanical Gardens; it is massive and absolutely magnificent - probably enough timber to make millions of pens. Of course, it would have to fall over by itself.]
A lot of the Edwardian furniture still around today, was made from Kauri. This pen was turned from a piece of old Kauri left over from some furniture restoration I did a few years ago.
