HOW IS CERAMIC JEWELLERY CREATED? :

Creating my handmade ceramic jewellery is a longer process than it may appear! First I start by hand making pendants or rolling beads out of soft porcelain clay. I need to make sure the holes are big enough to fit the special type of firing wire and also allow for the clay to shrink after drying and firing.

These need to dry then they are bisque fired at a low temperature of about 1000°c. It takes a couple of days for the firing process to complete. After bisque I may then hand paint designs on with coloured underglaze. I let them dry for a day or so and then apply clear glaze carefully with a brush to those I want to appear shiny avoiding the holes so they don't stick.

Clear glazed beads need to be hung on special wire racks and have to ensure they don't touch during this final firing otherwise they will stick together and can't be used. Most beads are kiln fired to stoneware temperature at 1200°c. Some coloured glazes such as pinks and purples can only be fired to a lower earthenware temperature at 1100°c as the colour will burn out.

If a metallic finish is desired, then lustre is to be painted on with a fine brush after the second firing. Then the piece is fired again for the third time, but this time it is a very low firing temperature at about 780°c. After all these firing processes I can then assemble my pieces with cords, chain and other jewellery findings.

It can be a surprise sometimes seeing how things turn out after firing, and takes some experimenting to get it right. As you can see it's quite a long process in making these ceramic jewellery pieces but I really enjoy creating them. No two pieces are ever the same!
