Profile : skadijewellery

For as long as I can remember I’ve had a passion for jewellery but been dismayed by the fact that what was available didn’t suit my style. I decided the best way to remedy the problem was to make my own jewellery.

I graduated from Curtin University of Technology with a Bachelor of Arts (Jewellery Design) in 2008 where I discovered I loved making jewellery even more than I loved wearing it. In my final year at University Skadi Jewellery Design was born.

I've always been completely enchanted by the beauty of Winter (snow especially) so I felt my business name should reflect this in the same way my designs do. Skadi is a frost giant and goddess from Nordic mythology. She is commonly associated with Winter and mountains and for me perfectly represents what my business is about; beauty, strength, uniqueness and wonderful stories.

My work is predominantly inspired by all the things I find beautiful like tattoos, the Victorian era, Gothic architecture, Art Nouveau, Winter and fairytales. Most of my work is about achieving beauty through detail and the relationship of a piece to the body. Like tattoos, I like to create pieces that are if not a part of the body then an extension of it, complementing the body's lines and forms (which is why I especially love to make custom personalised pieces!).
My main aim is to meld the timeless beauty of organic designs of past centuries with contemporary design without being gratuitously conceptual to the detriment of the aesthetic.

These days I live in the mountains (Jindabyne, NSW) and everytime it snows I giggle like a little girl. Since moving from Melbourne I decided to take the plunge and not get a 'real job' to help pay the bills so here's hoping there's a future in making shiny baubles!

My work is stocked in a few stores in Melbourne and Sydney and on my website www.skadijewellery.com.
