“Fevs ceramic tile art.
Hi, my name is Fev, I reside in the lovely rural/seaside town of Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland, Victoria. I have been a self-taught mosaic artist for several decades. Becoming frustrated with the limitation of colours in ceramic tiles I decided to teach myself to make my own range of clay tiles so as to broaden the scope available to me. Over the years people would ask me where I would obtain these from. I found that I was more interested in creating individual flowers, hearts, stars, lips etc., than with the actual mosaicing process. Instead of making square tiles I create shapes of stars, hearts, lips, flower etc. By incorporating them into my mosaics I then can create unique pieces .Over the last year I have extended this into creating buttons, pendants and beads.
Every piece created is an individual “one-off” piece and therefore there may be minor differences in size & design of each piece. The hand contact in the production is labour intensive, from the rolling out of the clay, the cutting, embossing, cleaning of the tiles, to the first bisque firing of 1000 C degrees. The final glaze firing process requiring temperatures ranging from: 1080 C for Earthenware – 1250 C for Stoneware. Some variations in shape and colour may occur from one individual piece to another. This may occur during the hands-on production, clay type, shrinkage of clay when drying and firing, placement in the kiln and heat distribution of kiln. These subtle variations add to the unique charm of my work. The joy is in the opening of the kiln at the end of the process. Never knowing what to expect but having a wonderful thrill upon discovering something unexpected has occurred during the firing.
Please visit my shop when you have a moment for all my handmade artisan clay work from tiles to beads, pendants and buttons, you may find that piece that will inspire you. Or you can find me on Facebook under “Fevs mosaic clay art” for regular updates for new listings.
