Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Chelsea, I live in the beautiful Whitsundays. I was a hairdresser for 16 years and then a stay at home mum with two amazing kids, my son, almost 5 and daughter,3.
I missed the creative side to hairdressing so was always on the look out for a new project, between that and my husbands concrete obsession, Raw design co was born!
Can you explain your craft/art and the material you like to use?
We make concrete home wares. Pots and furniture. Concrete is the main material we use, along with timber and different oxides and paints. Just recently I have started experimenting with different yarns and ropes to add texture with the concrete, and have introduced our new weave range.
Where do you get your inspiration and what is your creative process?
Pinterest is my main source of inspiration, as well as home and decorating magazines which i get in digital format, so I take screenshots of everything i love, then i flick through all of these and that gets the ideas flowing.
How long have you been creating and how did you get into craft/art?
I can't really remember not having a project on the go! ( many still unfinished!) I got the creative side from my Mum who I think has tried every craft under the sun, so she taught me a lot and always encouraged creativity.
How did you come up with your business name?
My husband and I threw around some names and he came up with Raw, which we both loved because it describes the material we work with perfectly.
What resources 'have or do you' use to help your creative pursuits (i.e. groups, classes, shops, websites etc)?
I have done different art and craft classes in the past and there are so many websites now you can learn so much from. You tube is great, I taught myself to crochet the other night, using a tutorial from You tube!
What's your best advice for someone starting up?
Try to be original. We all get our inspiration from somewhere, but always try to be creative in your designing to give your customers something a little different, not just a carbon copy of what someone else is already doing.
Do you have any advertising/promotion tips for sellers to be successful?
Definitely instagram and facebook are must haves. and I really think having great photos of your product is a must
Can you share any lessons that you have learned the hard way?
Learning to switch off , and to say no at times. These are lessons I am still learning how to master! I've lost count of how many sleepless nights I've had just thinking of new ideas, or answering emails at all hours. You will just end up getting super stressed and run down, which takes all the fun out of it!
What do you like to do besides creating?
Camping, wakeboarding, boating, cooking, watching afl, going to the beach, as long as the sun is shining, i love to be outdoors.
What is your favourite music, television show, film, book, website, phone app?
Music - Matchbox 20, Foo fighters, love anything acoustic.
TV - Revenge was a fave, I've just started on 800 words, think that will be a good one
Movie - Chick flicks, Sweet home Alabama, 50 first dates are probably the faves
Books - Don't get the chance to read books as much as I would like, but the last one was the longest road, by Nicolas Sparks which I really enjoyed
Phone App - I use thesquare instapic app all the time.
What would be your perfect day?
An early morning wakeboard with family and friends, followed by a picnic lunch, then spend the afternoon relaxing at the beach or by the pool in the sun, with a good book or magazine. And then drinks and nibblies and a good game of cards with friends.
Who is one of your favourite madeit seller, explain why in less than 10 words?
me'n'three - Me 'n' three have beautiful kids clothes and clutch purses
