Photography prop designer & aspiring photographer, Katrina from SheriRose: “Having my own babies sparked my desire to create – it really is rewarding!”

Hello! My name is Katrina and I mostly create speciality items for newborn photography and baby gifts, although I love to crochet and sew pretty much anything I can get my hands on! I’ve been selling on Made It since late 2010 as a small scale solo hobbyist. I am a stay at home mother to four wonderful children who are 11, 9, 7 and 3. There are three girls, one boy, one daddy, one mummy, one dog and 6 hermit crabs in our mix.

Most of my creating is done in the hub of the home, either crocheting on the couch surrounded by the kids or sewing at our kitchen table, still surrounded by the kids. I enjoy working with the daily happenings surrounding me and my little ones talking to me as I go.

I would love to be a newborn photographer but as I do not have the time to undertake this venture, I live vicariously through others. I love creating classic newborn bonnets and outfits and get a buzz every time I see a new image of something I’ve made on a darling little newborn.

Having my own babies sparked my desire to create so when I’m not crocheting or sewing for photographers, I am constantly making things for my own children like winter hats and cowls, dresses and coats. It really is very rewarding!

When I started on Made It, I’d just had my second daughter and I fell in love with sewing ruffle pants and dresses for my girls. A few friends told me I should sell them so I researched online and discovered Made It!

I started out selling my sewn creations but I soon found there were too many others doing the same thing so I decided it was time to differentiate myself. A friend of mine is a photographer who knew I could crochet and sew, and she suggested that I make baby bonnets….. I haven’t looked back since!

There aren’t too many days when I’m not imagining something new to make! I have a couple of photographers who happily work with me and permit me to use their wonderful images and this has really helped the look of my shop.

To me, handmade is very much about quality and individuality. I love that it’s not about mass production and that each person can have a creative outlet. My greatest satisfaction comes from feedback through the photographers who tell me how much their mummies have appreciated the outfits for their newborn babies; it’s like you can touch other people’s lives with your handiwork.

I do my best to work with my customers and create something specific to their tastes and requirements. I love what I do!

I remember googling “selling handmade items in Australia” and finding Made It. The first sale had me hooked and I am so grateful for such a well-supported local selling platform. I hope that what I make contributes to it in a positive way.
