Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Ange, I live in beautiful Tassie, in a tiny house with a glorious view with my Bmx riding husband, 2 cheeky children Oscar & Rosie and our 2 dogs and 1 cat! Apooki originally began as a way to pass the time after I had my first child - I was always used to working full time and all over a sudden I was at home with a baby and all he did was sleep, I had all this time on my hands. So I began making earrings for friends and family and it has just grown from there - sadly gone are the days of having a sleepy newborn and most of my work now gets done at night once the kids are tucked up in bed.
Can you explain your craft/art and the material you like to use?
My very first product was fabric button earrings and it still is one of my most popular items - but to keep it exciting and different, I like to source unique fabrics and have even started making my own custom fabric to use. My other big seller is my laser cut jewellery, which I have cut out of Tasmanian Oak, which showcases how beautiful our timber is down here in Tassie, it smells divine when fresh off the cutter and each order I have cut the wood grain always looks so different.
Where do you get your inspiration and what is your creative process?
I get inspiration from everywhere, I try not to get too caught up in trends but it's hard not to, when it's what people want. Each season I find the fashion helps inspire what colours I use in my earrings - I'm not one to shy away from colour! With my laser cut designs, I have a little diary I carry around with me that I'm always writing new ideas in, some come to fruition, others don't see the light of day. When I get a chance I sit down and turn those ideas into a digital file on the computer which I then send off to be cut, there's nothing more exciting to me than seeing the finished product!
How long have you been creating and how did you get into craft/art?
I've always dabbled in jewellery making in some form or another, but began Apooki back in 2009 and started my Madeit store not long after. It's been very exciting to watch both my own business and Madeit grow over the last few years.
How did you come up with your business name?
I can thank one of my girlfriends for the inspiration in naming my budding business - she's always called me 'Pooks' or 'Pooki' so it's just a little play on that.
What resources 'have or do you' use to help your creative pursuits (i.e. groups, classes, shops, websites etc)?
Here in Tassie we are extremely lucky to have such an amazing and supportive crafting community, I've met some wonderful like minded ladies through markets etc. that I can chat to and bounce ideas of. I'm also blessed to have some pretty creative friends who are constantly inspiring me. Youtube has been invaluable in helping me get my head around the design software I use for my laser cut jewellery, I couldn't count how many tutorials I've watched! Lastly, Pinterest is a great place to find inspiration.
What's your best advice for someone starting up?
It may sound cliche....but just DO IT! If you've got an idea for a business or something you love to do, just give it a try, what's the worst that can happen? It may just be the best thing you've ever done. Surround yourself with supportive people and never be afraid to ask for help or advice.
Do you have any advertising/promotion tips for sellers to be successful?
Always keep things fresh, regularly working on new products will help gain customers and keep them interested! Branding, branding, branding, create a strong brand that stands out from the crowd
Great photos are worth there weight in gold, spend some time getting your product photos perfect.
Can you share any lessons that you have learned the hard way?
Create a strong brand for your business, it took me a long time to find branding that suited my business and that I was happy with, but now that I have it, I'm wishing I'd done it a lot sooner. Your branding is the first thing people notice, it needs to be strong and cohesive and really represent you and your products.
A big one for me is time management, you don't need to be able to do it all, especially when you add kids to the mix! Some days you wont get your orders out, or maybe the housework doesn't get done or you don't get tea on the table, but that's ok!
What do you like to do besides creating?
I love getting out there and doing things as a family, on the weekends you'll find us out on our bikes or taking the dogs on walks, in summer we love to take the kids camping.
I enjoy getting in the kitchen and baking sweet treats......and then eating them!
What is your favourite music, television show, film, book, website?
I enjoy a wide variety of music and currently on my playlist you can find London Grammar, Bastille, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Xavier Rudd
When it comes to TV, I'm afraid the trashier the better!! I'm talking Real Housewives, Girls, Californication, Hart of Dixie....
Books, I used to be such a bookworm, these days I just can't find the time to sit down and read a book - instead you'll find me flicking through a recipe book or a good magazine - Womens Health, Frankie, Peppermint
What would be your perfect day?
A sleep in!! Followed by a ride down by the water and a great coffee at one of the Cafes, a visit to the farmers market with the kids to buy a basket full of pastries and ending the day with a bbq on the deck and perhaps a few sneaky glasses of bubbles.
Who is your favourite madeit seller, explain why in less than 10 words?
Joeyjellybean - she's a machine that girl, 4 kids and she still manages a hugely successful business and is constantly coming up with amazing fresh ideas!
